Travel

This page lists travel options for getting to the north-east.

Please note: There is no parking available at The Hott and what little exists in Thorngrafton will be used by our caterer. There is also no parking at or near the church. We encourage our guests to make use of public transport to get to and from The Hott if possible, although we will be making arrangements for guests with restricted mobility. Please indicate if this applies to you on the RSVP page.

Planes

British Airways runs a regular service from Heathrow to Newcastle Airport. If you have Avios to spend, or can get a good deal on flights, this is the quickest and easiest way to get from London and the south-east to Northumberland. Newcastle airport is shown on the map above.

Flybe also operates flights from London City Airport.

Once at Newcastle Airport, you can take the Metro or a bus to Newcastle Central station, where you can catch a train on the trans-Pennine route to Hexham, Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill or Haltwhistle.

Trains

Guests travelling from outside of the north-east region who do not wish to bother with British Airways or Flybe should consider trains into Newcastle Central station, shown on the map above. The authoritative source of information on these and all other trains is National Rail Enquiries.

Once at Newcastle Central, whether having arrived by train or by Metro/bus from the airport, you will need a train on the trans-Pennine route (Newcastle-Carlisle).

Not every train stops at Bardon Mill, though more do at Hexham, Haydon Bridge and Haltwhistle for guests that plan to stay in any of these locations. The map shows the location of each of these stations.

Trains run hourly, but trains which stop at Bardon Mill currently run every two hours. If going to Bardon Mill, it is also usually possible to catch the train which does not stop at Bardon Mill and get off at Haltwhistle, having overshot by one stop. The next train in the reverse direction arrives only a few minutes later and does stop at Bardon Mill and the same ticket is valid, whether direct or changing at Haltwhistle.

Again, National Rail Enquiries is the authoritative source of information on these trains.

Automobiles

Cars

If you do travel to the north-east by car, please try and leave the car near your digs and use a train, bus or taxi for the final leg to The Hott.

Buses

Hexham, Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle are all served by the 685 Newcastle-Carlisle bus. Depending on the time of trains (and the potential 2 hour gap between them at Bardon Mill), the 685 may provide a convenient alternative. The service is operated by Stagecoach and timetables are available here.

Taxis

Here are some local taxi firms we have used which can offer affordable transport to/from The Hott and adjacent towns.

  • Hadrian Taxis – 01434 689497
  • Haydon Taxis – 01434 671197
